Instagram is a lot of things, a chat app isn’t one of them. Of course you can send direct messages or DM’s to other people and exchange pictures, but that’s about all you have.
The company adds more and more features with each update, but Instagram lags behind a full-fledged chat application like Whatsapp or Facebook Messenger.
Most chat programs do not really allow users to read messages remotely, but there are workarounds that somehow allow access to messages remotely. The same goes for DM Instagram.
Honestly, you can’t send them right back. There’s no way to do that in the application. Any application or service that claims to want to recover your deleted messages, but we strongly recommend that you stay away from these messages.
One possibility that can work, however, is to request your data from Instagram. If you do this, you will get a JSON file with all your Instagram data and probably the DM you are looking for (including deleted data).
In this article we’ll look at how to restore deleted Instagram messages related to account information on PCs and mobile phones.

If you are in front of a computer, as we recommend you use this method, you can request your account information here and then receive instructions to help you extract external Instagram messages from your downloaded account information.
Step one: Go to Instagram and log in. Click on your profile picture in the upper right corner and then click on Settings.
Step two: Read the section on privacy and security.
Step three: Scroll down to find downloads and then click Download Requests.
Step four: You will be asked to enter your e-mail address. Enter the e-mail address to which you want to send the information.
Step five: For security reasons, you will be asked to enter your password. Enter them and click on Download Request.
Instagram will inform you that your data will be collected and will be sent to you by post within 48 hours.

How do I find the Instagram messages in a downloaded file? (on PC)
Now that you have the data file that Instagram sent you, we need to open it with any JSON-compatible file reader and find our messages.
It’s easier on the computer, and we recommend you do it. You can also do this on your phone, but to do so you need to download an application that can read and extract .zip archives and other JSON files.
Step one: Follow the link in the email you received from Instagram.
Step two: For security reasons, you will be asked to login to your account. Log in and upload your data.
It’s downloaded as a .zip archive.
Step three: Unpack the Zip archive into a folder of your choice. You will see all your data well organized in folders and multiple JSON files.
Step four: Find the messages.json file and open it with a word processor such as Notepad or Wordpad. Here you can see all your calls.
Note that this file can take a long time if you send a lot of messages. We recommend using a rich word processor like Wordpad or even a code editor like Visual Studio Code or Atom to easily find your messages.

If you’re in the Instagram application for Android or iOS, you can get your download data here, where you’re likely to find all your deleted messages.
- Go to your profile page.
- Press the hamburger symbol in the upper right corner to open the settings.
- Click on Security.
- Click on Download data
All you now have to do is enter your email address and password, and your account details will be emailed to you within 48 hours.
How do I find the Instagram messages in a downloaded file? (by phone)
Again, we don’t offer this, but if you don’t have access to your computer, you can unpack the archive with your phone and read the JSON file.
- Go to your mail request and click on a link in an email sent by Instagram to download the data archive.
- You will be redirected to the phone’s browser and receive a connection request for security reasons. Log in and upload your data.
The following steps require a file browser that can work with zip files (in case your phone’s file playback firmware can’t do it) and a program to play JSON files.
For the purpose of this article I use files from Google and JSON Genie, but feel free to use any other application you wish.
- Delete the downloaded archive at the location of your choice.
- Find the message.json file and open it with the JSON editor.
- Here you can find all your Instagram DMs.
Note that since this is a JSON file, your calls are divided into tables. In each table there are two other tables: one with a conversation, the other with the participants. You must find out for yourself which table contains the desired call.
Although it will take a long time, it will probably help you find the external Instagram message you were looking for.
