Unlike the Facebook Messenger application on our smartphones or tablets where you can easily access the camera and microphone, on a Windows 10 desktop or laptop, there are a few things you need to do to make the camera and microphone work with the new FB Messenger application on Windows 10. In this quick guide, we’ll show you how to give Messenger access to your camera and microphone in Windows 10’s privacy settings and how to check that your camera or microphone is working properly.
How to activate the camera in Facebook Messenger Windows 10
On Windows 10 PCs, most applications, including Facebook Messenger, don’t access a shared camera or webcam connected to them by default for security and privacy reasons.
When you first make a video call using the Messenger application on a Windows 10 computer, in most cases the application will ask you for permission to access the camera. You only need to grant access the first time. The Messenger application will not repeat the request in the future when the application requests access to your camera.
If you don’t see the pop-up, follow these steps to have Messenger manually use your webcam through the Windows 10 privacy settings.
Step one: Search and open settings from the Windows 10 search bar or Cortana.
Step two: In the Settings window, select the Privacy option. Then in the left pane, under Apply Permissions, select Camera.
Step three: Under Allow access to the camera on this device, click the Edit button and make sure the Allow access to the camera on this device option is enabled.
Step four: Under Allow applications to access the camera, make sure the option is enabled.
Step Five: Under Choose the Microsoft Store applications that can access the camera, find the Messenger application and make sure the switch next to it is selected. This allows the Messenger application to access your camera.
Step six: When you have completed all the steps above, try making the video call again. A connection should be established immediately without requesting access authorization, and your camera should now be in video call mode.
When the messenger indicates that no camera is detected….
This may be due to improper connection of the camera, a problem with the driver or faulty hardware. Follow the steps below to verify that the working camera is connected to your computer:
- Find and open the Device Manager from the Start menu.
- Expand the Cameras section and see if there are any cameras listed.
- If it is present, right-click on it, select Properties and verify that it is working properly.
If none of the listed cameras are present, it means that your camera is not connected or installed. Make sure the camera is properly connected to the computer and install the camera driver using the driver CD provided with the camera.

To activate the microphone in Facebook Messenger Windows 10
As with the camera privacy settings mentioned above, most applications do not access the computer’s microphone by default for security and privacy reasons. You must give the Messenger app access to the microphone through the privacy settings in Windows 10 so that it can use the microphone to record and send voice messages or make phone calls.
Follow these steps to manually give Messenger access to the microphone on your Windows 10 computer.
Step one: Go to the Start menu, find and open Settings.
Step two: Go to Privacy > Microphone (in the left pane).
Step three: Under Allow access to the microphone on this device, click Edit. Then click to enable the Microphone access for this device option if it is not already enabled.
Step four: Next, make sure that the toggle under Allow applications to access your microphone is enabled.
Step Five: Under Select the Microsoft Store applications that can access your microphone, find the Messenger application and make sure the toggle next to it is selected. This allows the messenger application to access your microphone.
After completing all the steps above, try sending a voicemail message or making a voice call in Windows Messenger 10. That should work now.
Facebook Messenger cannot detect the microphone
If Messenger shows that it cannot connect to your microphone when you make a voice call, or continues to show that you allow Messenger to access your microphone when you try to record a voice call, this may be due to a bad microphone connection, a driver issue, or faulty hardware.
